Heading for the Emergency Room:
The Harsh Reality of Northeast Ohio’s Inability to Care for its Poor
On Thursday, December 11, the North East Ohio Coalition for the Homeless released a survey funded by OCHC of over 300 homeless people in the Cleveland area. The study asked questions regarding health care needs and whether health concerns or costs caused people to lose their homes. The answer was that 1 out of 3 said that health concerns or costs was a cause of their loss of home. State Rep. Mike Foley keynoted and other speakers were Brian Davis, Executive Director of NEOCH; Matt Carroll, Director of the Cleveland Department of Public Health; Francis Afram-Gyening, FACHE, Chief Executive Officer of Care Alliance, an FQHC; Lisa Baskin from the Free Clinic; and Joshua Kanary, Organizer for NEOCH. Richard Winder told his story of how health care caused his and his spouse's homelessness.
Meetings: Monthly meetings alternate between the fourth Thursday evenings and the fourth Friday morning.
